Text by Galerie Maria Wettergren:
Murex 4ever is as much a tribute to the rich heritage of Mediterranean cultures as to the wild landscapes of Signe Emdal’s native Denmark, reflecting the artist’s enthusiasm for historical studies, as well as her great sensitivity to nature.
At the Danish Institute of Science and Art in Rome, the artist explored the color purple, made from the Murex sea snail, including its origins and historical influence on the Mediterranean cultures. Returning to Skagen, Denmark, from her residency in Rome, the artist was inspired by the windy landscapes, lights and colors of the North Sea coast. While weaving the work, she found herself surrounded by symbols of life and rebirth, such as a snakeskin shedding, and incorporated the never-ending cycle of life into her work, together with the Phoenician’s purple, as a tribute to continuity and eternity.
